KampKaBOOM organized by Bright Sparks Montessori and Hobbies 4 All has completed its first week of fun and frolic at the Benson Town Centre. The camp was attended by 21 children and each day was eagerly awaited by the participants for it brought with it a new theme and new activity.
On Monday we started with the theme Wriggly Wiggly, we had a story telling session based on the Eric Carle book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ our children just loved it. Then it was time for the group activity of the day - a skit. They had to select the roles, plan the dialogue and present a skit. This was an opportunity for sharpening their interpersonal skills and reinforced their understanding of the story.
Our individual activity comprised of making a table mat – featuring our star of the day ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ here we deployed a layered collage technique combined with papier mache to create an adorable table mat. Our skill sessions are woven into the art work so that art exploration and hobbies evolve as a result of the child’s effort.
Tuesday was set aside for Growing Wonders – plants were the key focus. We were exploring gardening as a hobby. We had asked the children dress as a gardener would in overalls and a hat. We planted peas and decorated the pot to look like a smiling doll. Children then took these pots home to water them and care for the growing seedling. They made a booklet shaped like a bean after listening to the story of Jack and the Bean stalk. The booklet had the stages of germination. Our children also enjoyed enacting the poem I am a tiny seed. There never is a dull moment at Kamp KaBOOM!
On Wednesday it was time to Rumble, Rumble, Rumble hear the Jungle Rumble. The earth shakes and sways and the birdies fly away – enter all things wild and wonderful. Elephants and lions, monkeys and snakes, alligators and eagles. They descended on Kamp KaBOOM to spend the day with our children. We had a puppet show by the children after they made their finger puppets. We also had a team activity where they made a huge adorable elephant – then they set about trying to pin his tail while blindfolded. Absolutely hilarious attempts watch the videos on www.summerhobbies4all.blogspot.com.
On Thursday we had an Alien Invasion – watch out parents all the children have spaceships and are well versed with the planets after this session. Not to mention all the aliens they have on board. Cool isn’t adequate to capture the beauty of this piece of craft work smashing is close amazing is better. Wow is what we heard most mamas say when they came to collect the children on Thursday.
On Friday our Camp celebrated Easter we had a treasure hunt and the children had to hunt for - what else but shiny beautifully wrapped easter eggs that were hidden around the play space and garden at Bright Sparks Montessori. It was so hugely popular that after the camp coordinators were exhausted trying to find new hiding places the children took over and the game went on amid squeals of delight. Then they made finger licking delicious, dripping mmmmmmm irresistible chocolates – then they ate the fruits of their effort – more chocolate. At the end of which they were looking like Easter bunnies with bright shiny eyes and chocolate smears finally they decorated little baskets in which they carried the remaining chocolates home to share with family and friends.
On Saturday Harry Potter came visiting – we watched a Quidditch game from the Harry Potter DVD. The children then made fridge magnets that resembled the snitch that Harry Potter is assigned to catch in the Quidditch match. They also made a wizards hat for themselves and then watched a live magic show that we had organized for them. By the end of the day you could hear them experimenting with spells. The team activity began with the children donning the sorting hat and being assigned a house – the same 4 houses from potter’s school namely Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Griffindor and Slitherin. We had a game for them it was fun watching the team spirit come alive.
Heading into a new week and lots of fun this week we have 2 venues – Benson Town and Richards Park. See you there with the kids. Adios.
